'The Spine of Britain' was the description my A level Geology teacher gave to the Pennines, and it has embedded itself within me ever since.

The Pennines are a low-rise mountain range that through Northern England. This impressive belt runs from the Peak District through Lancashire, the Yorkshire Dales and even pushes the Anglo-Scottish border. They are a significant feature of the landscape as I pass through them on the Transpennine Trains on my way home to South Wales.

The painting to the left was inspired by a 1906 geological map found at Ackworth School in their Geography Department in the Autumn, 2011. The colours and their original placement are a direct reflection upon the map. However, the consistencies of the hand-made paints promoted organic movement, mimetic of erosive processes common in the Pennine landscapes.
